The UAE's New AI and Data Authority: What It Means for Your Business
In June 2026 the UAE approved a single national body for AI, data and digital government. It is not an AI law, and its stated mandate is aimed at federal government, but it changes who sets AI and data policy in the UAE.
On 14 June 2026 the UAE approved the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence and Data Authority, a single national body responsible for data, artificial intelligence and digital government, reporting directly to the Cabinet. It is chaired by Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications. The Authority brings together three bodies: the Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, the digital government sector of the TDRA, and the UAE Data Office. Its mandate covers national AI and data policy, standards and guidelines for data and AI management, compliance across federal entities, national AI capability building, international partnerships and support for cybersecurity. It is not a standalone AI law, and its publicly stated mandate is primarily focused on federal government.
What This Means for Business
Data and AI policy, previously held by separate bodies, now sit under one mandate, with the power to propose strategies and legislation.
The UAE Data Office, the supervisory authority under the PDPL, is one of the bodies merged into the new Authority. Businesses should watch how its PDPL role is carried forward.
Organisations that supply or work with federal entities are the most likely to feel new standards first.
The private sector is not directly targeted today, but it should not treat the change as irrelevant.
The rules that apply to your AI systems today still come from existing layers: the PDPL, the DIFC and ADGM regimes, and sector guidance. See the overview of AI regulation in the UAE for how they fit together.

No. Its mandate concerns national AI and data policy and federal entities. Sector and free-zone regulators continue to supervise their own regimes.
The Data Office is one of the bodies folded into the new Authority. Businesses should keep following Data Office guidance and watch for announcements on how PDPL supervision is organised in the new structu
No legal obligation follows directly from the Authority's creation. A sensible step is to inventory your AI systems and data flows, so you can respond quickly if new standards or rules follow.
